Cast iron fireback with two coats of arms linked together as in wedlock in a crowned cartouche, most likely celebrating a Marquis and his wife.
The man’s shield on the left is as follows: quarterly, 1 and 4, with three bezants, 2 and 3 with bend and 6 bendy Fleurs de Lys.
The lady’s shield, on the right, is: Cantoned cross billetty 18, in chief 5 in each canton placed 2 and 1 and 2, and in pile, four in each canton, placed 1 and 2and 1. These coats of arms are those of the many branches of the Choiseul family.
The Choiseul family was one of the very powerful French Houses in the 18th century. A Duc of Choiseul was a minister of Louis XV and gave birth to the Franco-Austran alliance that brought about the marriage of future Louis XVI to archduchess Marie-Antoinette.
