A large rounded molding runs up and around the hearth opening of the mantel, flanked with a recessed molding and pair of volutes. A second recessed panel enhances the impression of depth. The lines of the mantel shelf follow these movements. This combination of moldings confers a sens of majesty and sobriety to the composition.
