L’Escalier de Cristal (attributed to), a cylindrical Japanese-style vase in crystal and gilt bronze
Dimensions
Height 12'' ⅝ 32cm
diameter: 6'' ¾ 17cm
Origin:
French, 19th century
This tall cylindrical vase, decorated with a gilt bronze dragon, is carved from thick crystal, hammered and engraved with cloud-like motifs. It is set within a finely chased gilt bronze element depicting waves on the lower register. A dragon, coiled around the vase, clings to its rim with one of its claws. The sinuosity of its body and the details are rendered with great accuracy (whiskers, scales, dorsal spines); likewise, the menacing posture of the monster, baring its teeth with its mouth open. The frequency of the motif of the dragon entwined around a cup or vase in the production of L’Escalier de Cristal, as well as the quality of its execution, supports the attribution to the Parisian firm.
