Old pair of Louis XIV style milestones, with a square base rising into a cone shape. Milestones were often placed at the entrance of properties. They were used to mark property lines but mostly to protect alleyways and gates from the wheels of horse drawn carriages called " chasse-roue "

Made of cast iron in the 20th century, this fireback is decorated with a scene from Genesis, in the style of Orientalism, the meeting of Abraham's servant with Rebecca, Isaac's future wife. Eliezer of Damascus is looking for a wife for his master Abraham's son. He meets Rebecca at a well and she agrees to give him a drink. The scene is depicted here across the entire height of the fireback, set against a desert background with two palm trees.
