Antique Louis XIV style fireplace in yellow Brocatelle marble

This antique Louis XIV style fireplace was made out of beautiful and bright yellow Brocatelle marble during the 19th century. The "Bollection", characteristic of Louis XIV style, can be seen in the opening of the fireplace. At the ends of the entablature, the spandrels are made up of moulded panels.

Julien-Nicolas RIVART (1802-1867) - Leather sheathed jewelry box decorated of porcelain marquetry

This box is graciously decorated with flowers in porcelain inlays by Julien-Nicolas Rivart . The latter is the inventor of the porcelain marquetry technique, a unique process, searched for a long time and patented in 1849, he was the only one to master. Since this date, he foresaw the possibility of inlaying not only in wood, but in several other types of materials as well, including cardboard, velvet and leather. Such examples are however very rare, which is why this box presents a particular historical value, the bouquet of roses and blue campanulas being inlaid in the leather.

Antique cast iron fireback with coat of arms of Pénancoët de Kéroualle

This antique cast iron fireback, made after 1684, is decorated with the arms of Louise-Renée de Penancoët of Kéroualle, Baroness of Petersfield, Countess of Fareham, Duchess of Portsmouth. Two greyhounds flank a diamond ""fess argent and six coins azure"" topped with a ducal crown. The point of the diamond rests on a mascaron representing a bearded man wearing a crown among curlicue foliage. The carving illustrates a delicate and vigorous craftsmanship. The high relief of the sculpture, the manner in which the tails of the hounds and the volutes of foliage overflow their rightful frame, make for a very lively composition. Louis-Renée (1629-1734) was the mistress of Charles II of England for some 15 years and was equally a secret agent for King Louis XIV of France. Saint-Evremond said of her “the silk ribbon that she wore at her waist united France and England”. Born in Brittany she lived a simple life in the family Château of Kéroual en Guilders. Noticed by the Duke of Beaufort, grand master of navigation, who courted her in vain but promised to get her an appointment as lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Orleans, the sister in law of King Louis XIV. He kept his promise post-mortem. Indeed in 1668, Louise Renée arrived in Versailles to serve Madame who was also the sister of Charles II of England. Louis XIV saw Louise Renée as a useful diplomatic asset. She set off to England as lady-in-waiting to Madame who was visiting her brother. Charles II had little sympathy for France and even less so for its King, but he loved women, of which Louis XIV was fully aware. The reception in Dover in honor of Madame was extravagant and Louise Renée attracted the eye of Charles II. The Treaty of Dover linked the two kingdoms: Charles II officially converted to Catholicism and receives the sum of two million crowns from Louis XIV. Both Kings would declare war on the United provinces and share the conquered provinces. Madame offered a jewel to her brother to thank him for his gifts and Louise-Renée was the messenger; as she handed him the gift, the King took her hand and is said to have declared : “This is the only real jewel I desire.” Upon her arrival in Versailles, Louis XIV sent her directly back to London where she was expected. She lived in a huge apartment in the palace of Whitehall where the King visited her every evening. She was officially made Lady-in-waiting to the Queen of England in 1671. In 1672 she gave birth to Charles Lennox, duke of Richmond and was granted an annuity of 138 000 pounds, the titles of Duchess of Fareham, Baroness of Petersfield and Duchess of Portsmouth. Her influence lasted 15 years until the death of the King in 1685. In 1684, on the request of Charles II, Louis XIV made her Duchess of Aubigny and Peer of France. This same year she acquired the Château of Trémazan (Finistère) which she linked to the lands of Kéroual. Louis-Renée died in Paris, rue des Saints Pères on November 14th 1734, having lost most of her fortune. Two similar models are preserved in the Musée d'Orléans and in the Musée du Berry in Bourges.

Large Neo-Troubadour buffet made out of carved walnut with bronze low-reliefs signed by Ferdinand Barbedienne

This large Neo-Renaissance style buffet features a rich carved decoration inspired by the Troubadour movement. Made in carved walnut around 1880, this buffet is the fruit of a particularly neat and sophisticated sculpture work. The lower part of the buffet is composed of four doors, the ends of which are carved with cartridges and chimeras in very high relief. The central doors are decorated with bas-reliefs in gilt bronze made after the sculptures of the Fountain of the Innocents by Jean Goujon (XVIth century) and signed by the bronzemaker Ferdinand Barbedienne. The upper part of this buffet is composed of a credentialed part with grotesques sculpted in the round. In the center, two doors are carved in very high relief, depicting a Court Jester with his bird of prey and a gentleman dressed in the fashion of the fifteenth century. The iconographic repertory, with chimeras, grotesques, cartridges and medieval characters, gives this buffet a Neo-Troubadour style design, inspired by the Renaissance style .

Antique Louis XV style carved walnut wardrobe with painted Japanese style decor

This large Louis XV style carved walnut wardrobe with Japanese-style decorative painting in relief was realized in the late 19th century. The 19th century is known as the century of “eclecticism” in decorative arts, during which artistic styles from past centuries were rediscovered and mixed together, and the time when non-European arts were truly discovered, which led to artistic movements such as Orientalism and Japonism. This wardrobe was inspired by both of these trends, firstly by its typically Louis XV style shape, tall and thin with the top part curved towards the center, and a lot of rounded shapes, curves and counter-curves, emblematic of the “rococo” period. The wardrobe is also decorated with a magnificent Japanese-style painting that brings back the exoticism from the Louis XV period, the time when “chinoiseries” and leafy designs were popular in interior decoration, as well as the wonder that Westerners showed for their fantasized version of the Far-East in the 1800's. The decor painted in relief on the doors of the cabinet has a Japanese character sitting on a tree branch. He wants to give a Geisha the bird's nest that he has just caught in the tree. Bows of ribbon and flower baskets are carved in low relief on the bottom of the cabinet and are inspired by the Louis XVI style. An important decor woth foliages motifs, scrolls and shells adorns all parts of this walnut cabinet.

Large exterior fountain in marble stone, late 19th century

This wall fountain was made in marble stone at the end of the 19th century in a Neo classical style. It is composed of a bassin with large moulding surmounted by an elliptical pediment adorned with a stone ball. On the center, a circle in relief has been sculpted to put the exit of the water, it takes the shape of an old man mascaron which we can assimilate with the River god.

Louis XVI oval mirror in gilt wood with a vase and flowers

This oval and beveled mirror made in the second half of the 19th century is a beautiful example of the Napoleon III decorative arts style. Finely chiseled, the decoration of the frame in stucco is inspired by the Louis XVI style, the mirror is indeed surmounted by a vase decoration adorned with a flowers bouquet and holding a laurel crown. From this central motif, flowers scrolls are escaping to fall on the sides.

This trumeau painted in beige was made in the late 19th century. Its frame very sober is simply adorned with small elements in stucco painted in gold in the upper part depicting acanthus leaves scrolls, typical of the Louis XV style.
