Théodore DECK (1823-1891), Earthenware dish with a flying mallard

This glazed ceramic dish was made in the workshop of the ceramist Théodore Deck (1823-1891). Théodore Deck initially trained as a stove maker. When he set up in Paris on his own account in 1858, he made stove linings and then, on the strength of his success, moved into ceramics. The studio produced many dishes in collaboration with well-known painters, including Ernest Carrière, who made a series of dishes on the same subject as this one in the 1890s-1900s. Deck gradually perfected his technique and enjoyed great success at the many World’s Fairs he took part in. In 1878, he was made an Officer of the Légion d'Honneur. He ran the Sèvres factory between 1887 and his death in 1891. The dish is decorated with an extremely naturalistic mallard captured in full flight, in the middle of a sky with cottony clouds and above a vast expanse of water as if wrinkled by a breath of wind. The background of this dish is particularly elaborate, clearly distinguishing between the sky and the water thanks to variations in the thickness of the glaze. This decoration reveals Deck’s interest in Far Eastern art, which he collected from the 1870s onwards. This inspiration is particularly evident in the choice of the mallard, often depicted by Hiroshige in his prints. This work is an emblematic example of Théodore Deck’s mastery of the enamel technique, enabling him to achieve great finesse in his work: the bird is depicted with great precision and clarity. The Théodore Deck et des pays du Florival Museum, in Guebwiller, has a dish also made by Deck, decorated with a mallard taking flight in front of a golden sun, which is very similar to another dish in the Marc Maison gallery.

This gilded overmantel features a large central palmette. This openwork palmette is surrounded by acanthus leaves with sinuous lines that hug the top of the overmantel. At the end of these leaves are blossoming and budding flowers. The overmantel's frame resembles a large molding, with identical branches of flowers at regular intervals. At the bottom of the overmantel, acanthus leaves curl around themselves.

Large Louis XVI period statuary marble mantel with foliage décor

This fireplace is characterized by its fine details on the entablature and legs. Finely carved acanthus leaves run the length of the band, twisting and curving to form sinuous lines. These lines originate from a central acanthus leaf, from which the entire band is symmetrically organized. The console part of the leg is decorated with a floral motif of acanthus leaves and a central bud, a typical Louis XVI motif. A ribbon motif is carved at the top of the legs, with laurel and oak leaves running the length of the legs. These fireplace motifs are all organized in rectangular frames carved into the marble and outlined by fine moldings, bringing volume and order to the fireplace. Also noteworthy is the small frieze of laurel leaves that adorn the inner contour of the fireplace.

Cast Iron and Glass Exterior Door

Imposing entrance door in cast iron, comprising a central leaf flanked by fixed side panels and topped with an openwork transom. The ensemble is adorned with an elegant design of symmetrical scrolls, stylized heart motifs, and palmettes—typical of the decorative vocabulary of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The wrought iron is crafted with precision, offering a harmonious interplay of curved and counter-curved lines. The entire structure is glazed with textured glass, providing both light and privacy. The door opens inward and is fitted with a sculpted metal scroll handle. The whole piece retains its original patina, with signs of wear consistent with its age.
