Monumental double door with fantastic decor

The two doors are divided into three parts. The top section presents an oculus or round window with the face of a fantastic character above; in the centre there is an oblong opening; the bottom of the wing of each door has moulded decoration. The glass panes are delicately engraved, but one of the four is missing. The figure above the oculus, half faun half devil, is holding between its teeth a garland of oak leaves that circles the small window and falls on either side of the main oblong opening below.

Stained glass window from a chapel with Mary as central figure

19th century stained glass window from a chapel in Bordeaux signed Mauméjean, Neo-Gothic style. Representing three hieratic standing figures placed on pedestals each in a separate stained glass panel. The central figure, is an woman dressed in bright green, representing Mary Magdalena, on her left, the pondering figure of a saint holding a staff, and on her right dressed in Roman attire a crowned King holding a harp and singing up towards the skies, representing King David. Above are three rosettes, featuring the faces of flying angel with red and green wings. The colors of the stained glass are strikingly bright, the features have been painted with attention to detail. Unfortunately we were unable to salvage the stone frame. This stained glass window is one of three – see items # 1027 and 1029.

« Leaving for the Hunt , Important enamelled stained glass window by Maison Lorin coming from the Château des Ollières in Nice, France

Framed by a geometrical frieze, this panel presents two figures standing under an architectural structure with a backdrop of a medieval landscape. The two characters are ready for the hunt: a gentleman, seen from the back, holds a greyhound by a leach, a lady turned slightly to the right has a falcon perched on her left hand. Her right hand points to the Provence region's coat of arms at her feet : “paly of or and gules”. Both are dressed in the styles of the days of François 1er and Henri II (1rst half of 16th century): the man wears a short doublet over a red chemise, an upper bombasted hose over particolored tights. The sleeves and shoes are « paned » as was very stylish in the 16th century. He wears a cap with a feather, which was equally very popular in those days. The lady wears a long Carmen red gown with puffed green shoulders and a lace collar. A large embroidered purse hangs from her waist. In the background, a landscape with a castle stands out against a blue sky. Imaginative architectural elements frame this scene in the Renaissance style: very fine columns support a curved pediment lush with flower and leaf festoons. The base of the composition is a trompe-l’œil of an architectural decoration framed by putti holding a festoon of flowers and fruit. In the middle, a blue shield heralding what are probably initials.

Louis XV style Carrara marble mantel

This very beautiful Louis XV style fireplace was made during the 19th century out of Carrara marble. Its carved décor is inspired by the model know as the “three shell model”, expressed here with a stylized shell surrounded by fleshy acanthus leaves on the front of the entablature. The jambs are delicately sculpted with volutes at the top and at the bottom.

Pompadour style fireplace in Breche d'Alep marble

This beautiful Louis XV style Breche d' Alep marble fireplace is called Pompadour referring to the Marquise de Pompadour, major woman figure of the 18th century and mistress of King Louis XV. Pompadour model is characterized by a serpentine front molded with a medallion (stylized variant of the shell). The legs of this model are curved, topped with carved scrolls.

"The Crimean Battle", antique cast iron fireback

Small fireback made out of cast iron in the 20th century. It represents a wounded soldier during an episode of the Crimean War, a conflict between the Russian Empire and a coalition of the Ottoman Empire, the Empire of Napoleon III, the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Sardinia, 1854-1856. It is triggered by the fear of the declining Ottoman Empire fall to Russian expansionism.

Antique fireback with jansenist decoration, 18th century

This antique fireback was made in the 18th century. At its center is represented the Jansenist badge with the three Theological Virtues. Faith is thus depicted as a blindfolded woman while Hope is represented by an anchor and Charity by a flaming heart. This medallion is surrounded by a Latin inscription "Ardet Amans Spe Nixa Fides" which means "Faith, relied on Hope, burning with the fire of Charity." This sentence appeared in the frontispiece of all Jansenists books. At the top, wa can see the Hebrew tetragrammaton. From either side of the medallion are the Cardinal Virtues : Fortitude, Justice, Temperance and Prudence. Jansenism is a movement first religious, then political and philosophical that develops in the 17th and 18th century in France and is based exclusively on the doctrine of St. Augustine. This doctrine develops mainly against the evolution of the Catholic Church and royal absolutism. This theological doctrine takes its name from Cornelius Jansen, Bishop of Ypres, who writes the founding text. An other fireback with the same model is known in the Abbaye of Orval, south of Belgium.

Fireback with erases armorials hold by greyhounds, 19th century

This cast iron fireback was made in the 19th century. It is a moulding of an original fireback conserved in the Musée Lorrain in Nancy and of which the armorials has been changed. Our fireback is decorated with armorials almost erased under a Marquis crown and encircled by a plants crown hold by two greyhounds. A decoration of archs resting on Corinthian columns comes to frame the whole and surmount a motif of mascaron and horns of plenty. We can also read the inscription "De cousance de 3 AVLLT. 1581"

This beautiful Louis XVI style mantel was executed in marble in the second half of the 19th century. The entablature is decorated with scrolls which develop on each side of an acanthus leaf. The jambs are formed by two tapered half columns, fluted and rudented with asparagus heads decoration, topped and supported by acanthus leaves, all resting on circular bases.

Regency style Pompadour mantelpiece, in Fleur de Pêcher marble

This Regency style mantelpiece was made in the 19th century, in Fleur de Pêcher marble. It is a Pompadour model: its ornamentation is organized around an oval-shaped medallion, in the center of the lintel. The moldings that frame it adapt to the curves of the sinuous lines of the fireplace. At the top of the jambs are two “S”-shaped volutes with uneven curves; the larger one, on the top, wraps around a pattern of shells on both sides (including on the sides of the mantelpiece). These scrolls are decorated with a frieze of pearls; they are topped with foliage, under the upper cornice. The jambs are fluted pilasters with cabling, slightly flared above the base.
